Wood Carving Animations

This time lapse animation shows the development of a Victorian Santa made from butternut wood. Before starting the carving process, Coffman knows what she'd like the Santa to look like. She makes a point to carve each area gradually in relation to all areas, rather than trying to complete one specific part of the carving at a time. Coffman feels that this technique enables her to allow the carving to adjust to changes that are made as she carves. By carving in this manner, one basic idea can turn out in many different variations by just allowing the natural tendencies of the grain of the wood to influence the lines and angles of the carving.
